Besma Bottoni

Time-Space-Environments
There are no objects in Besma Bottoni's paintings. However, one has the impression of landscapes and sometimes there is a vague suggestion of figures. This is not really a contradiction: the sensual and colourful paintings focus on a time and space beyond the familiar, converging at the point where eternity mixes with the moment and expresses itself as an energetic place where faceless shadows impose themselves as actors.
After a geometric, abstract beginning, the painter developed a more open concept of her art, in which colour is the central element. Besma Bottoni works without a recipe and her paintings don't know any repetition. She combines colours with brush and spatula to create a calm surface of a dynamic flow of colour.
Her way of using colours mixes harmonious and disharmonious contrasts that strengthen the artistic expression. A crystalline white pigment can be added to a final layer of paint, or a surface can be broken up with a structural material such as sand. Concealment and revelation define the painting and become a visual metaphor. In the Iraqi-born artist's colourful play, the world appears behind things. There is a familiar expression from oriental mysticism, "Alhakika" (true truth), which only reveals itself to the true seeker. Besma Bottoni's paintings are a materialisation of spiritually perceptible spaces.
